Following the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur last week, the British Ambassador John Hawkins has expressed his government’s support for the efforts and praised the state of Qatar’s involvement with brokering the peace agreement.
The agreement was signed between the government of Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement, a movement comprised of a number of rebel groups affected by the violence in Darfur.
Hawkins said: “We welcome the signing of this agreement and support its implementation. This is a positive development towards achieving peace in Darfur.” “We strongly commend the State of Qatar and HE Minister al-Mahmoud in particular for their role in supporting peace in Darfur in recent years and we welcome the continued Qatari role through the international follow-up committee,” he stated.
“We encourage all parties to continue to engage with each other to reach common agreements based on the Doha document and to urgently agree a ceasefire,” added Hawkins.
